    Are Malaria precautions necessary?
Yes, Malaria precautions are necessary and must be strictly adhered to. Please contact your local medical centre.

Will we be walking a lot?
Yes, this tour involves a fair amount of walking, so a small daypack and walking shoes are advisable.

What will the weather be like?
Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Do I need a passport or visa?
Yes, you require a valid passport and please ensure that you have a multiple entry visa for South Africa

How many people are on tour at one time?
Our group size usually numbers between 6 and 20 passengers. By travelling in small groups, it means that we don't invade campsites and can avoid wasting time in constantly having to wait for people. It also enables us to maintain a far more personal service with our clients. From experience our groups are normally made up of individuals, couples and sometimes groups of friends aged between 18 and 55 years. The mere physical and youthful mentality, which prevails on these safaris, makes them generally unsuited to anybody over the age of 55 years. The minimum size of a group for a guaranteed departure must be 6 people.

    What is the equipment like?
Our modern camping equipment is of the highest standard available, and makes the experience comfortable even for first timers. Drifters provide all group equipment, and clients are only required to bring along their own towels, sleeping bags, and a supplementary camping mattress (if desired).

Do we need extra protection against the sun?
Yes, it can get very hot, so suitable precautions against sunburn should be taken and a sun hat, preferably cloth type, should be taken on the safari.

What are the tour guides like?
Our guides are mature adults who are young at heart and enjoy their work. They are chosen for their personalities, their interest in their environment, their experience and ability to handle people. We have a hard core of full-time guides as well as a pool of good reliable part-timers, all registered with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa.

What kind of transport will be used?
Drifters operates with Mercedes and Toyota Minibuses, Iveco Safari mobiles, Land cruisers, Samils & Unimogs, all chosen for their practicality and reliability. They seat from 7 to 21 clients depending on the application.

    Do I need spending money?
Yes, spending money will be required for the restaurant meals, drinks, visas, tips, curios, (airport tax US$ approximately $30, and airport transfers, for flying pax only), and any other optional excursions.

    What luggage may I take?
A barrel bag or internal frame backpack is best suited for this trip (Suitcases will not be permitted). An extra tog bag or camera bag is allowed.

    Will guides accompany us?
Yes, all trips are accompanied by two professional guides for optimum efficiency, catering for a maximum of 14 people per vehicle.

    Is the programme flexible?
Yes, remember to help us to help you by participating and by keeping an open mind regarding flexibility. A certain amount of flexibility is required when dealing with so many variable factors and third world conditions.

Will we be seeing any wildlife?
Yes, almost a quarter of this country is devoted to wildlife sanctuaries, and these remote and unspoilt wilderness areas are widely acknowledged as offering some of the finest game viewing in Africa.

What are the vehicles and equipment like?
Our vehicles and our equipment are used under extremely harsh conditions, which means that ultimately everything we use has to be specifically designed and adapted for our use. We are unable to simply purchase our vehicles off the shelf as such and in fact each vehicle has to be manufactured to our specific needs, within the parameters of what is available. Likewise our equipment, tents, tables, chairs and the like, are all specifically made for and designed by us. So remember, when things have that worn and well-used look, that is because they work hard and they work well.

What participation is expected of passengers?
Clients are expected to be able to erect their own tent (quite simple), and will sleep two to a tent, unless obviously the group is an odd number.
Clients participate fully in all camp chores i.e. cooking, cleaning, erecting and taking down of tents. A duty roster is normally drawn up with the passengers and people work in groups.
