    What baggage may I take?

Baggage on the tour will be strictly limited to one large bag, (barrel bag or internal framed backpack), weighing a maximum of 15kg. Drifters will also allow a smaller hand luggage bag or camera bag per person in order to prevent complications on vehicles, airplanes and boats, this allowance must be adhered to. Suitcases will not be permitted.

Do I need a passport or visa?

Yes, you require a valid passport and for certain nationalities, a visa for South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. Visas for most nationalities are obtainable at the border posts. Non-residents are required to pay for most extras in foreign currency only. All visa requirements and border formalities are the responsibility of the client and Drifters will not hold the tour up for irresponsible reasons.

    Will guides accompany us?
Yes, all trips are accompanied by two professional guides for optimum efficiency, catering for a maximum of 14 people per vehicle.

What are the vehicles and equipment like?

Drifters vehicles and our equipment are used under extreme harsh conditions, which means that ultimately everything they use has to be specifically designed and adapted to their use. Drifters are unable to simply purchase vehicles off the shelf as such and in fact each vehicle has to be manufactured to our specific needs, within the parameters of what is available. Likewise the equipment, tents, tables, chairs and the like are all specifically made for and designed by them. So remember, when things have that worn and well-used look that is because they work hard and they work well.

What participation is expected of passengers?

Clients are expected to be able to erect their own tent (quite simple), and will sleep two to a tent, unless obviously if the group is an odd number.
Clients participate fully in all camp chores i.e. cooking, cleaning, erecting and taking down of tents. A duty roster is normally drawn up with the passengers and people work in groups.

Do we need extra protection against the sun?
Yes, it can get very hot, so suitable precautions against sunburn should be taken.

    What is the equipment like?

Our modern camping equipment is of the highest standard available, and makes the experience comfortable even for first timers. Drifters provide all group equipment, and clients are only required to bring along their own towels, sleeping bags, and a supplementary camping mattress (if desired).

How many people are on tour at one time?

Our group size usually numbers between 6 and 20 passengers. By travelling in small groups it means that we don't invade campsites and can avoid wasting time in constantly having to wait for people. It also enables us to maintain a far more personal service with our clients. From experience our groups are normally made up of individuals, couples and sometimes groups of friends. The mere physical and youthful mentality, which prevails on these safaris, makes them generally unsuited to anybody over the age of 45 years. The minimum size of a group for a guaranteed departure must be 6 people.

What are the tour guides like?

Our guides are mature adults who are young at heart and enjoy their work. They are chosen for their personalities, their interest in the environment, their experience and their ability to handle people. We have a hard core of full-time guides as well as a pool of good reliable part-timers, all registered with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa.

    Are Malaria precautions necessary?

Yes, Malaria precautions are necessary and must be strictly adhered to. Please contact your local medical centre.

What kind of transport will be used?

Drifters operates with Mercedes and Toyota Minibuses, Iveco Safari mobiles, Land cruisers, Samils & Unimogs, all chosen for their practicality and reliability. They seat from 7 to 21 clients depending on the application.

Will we be walking a lot?
Yes, this tour involves a fair amount of walking, so a small daypack and walking shoes are advisable.

What will the weather be like?
Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

    Do I need spending money?
Yes, spending money will be required for the restaurant meals, drinks, visas, tips, curios, (airport tax to be paid in US$ - approximately $20 to $30 bring the exact amount and airport transfers, for flying pax only), and any other optional excursions.

    Is the programme flexible?

Yes, remember to help us to help you by participating and by keeping an open mind regarding flexibility. A certain amount of flexibility is required when dealing with so many variable factors and third world conditions.

Will we be seeing any wildlife?

Yes, almost a quarter of this country is devoted to wildlife sanctuaries, and these remote and unspoiled wilderness areas are widely acknowledged as offering some of the finest game viewing in Africa.

Is this the right tour for me?

Africa can be harsh, with not only unpredictable weather, but unpredictable attitudes as well. Clients must expect delays for whatever reason. The most necessary item on this tour is an open and flexible mind.

What is the recommended currency on this tour?
The recommended currency for this tour is US Dollars in small denominations.
