Gorilla Trekking is one of the most sought wildlife experience in Africa today. Many travelers visit Uganda, Rwanda and Congo to meet the rare mountain gorillas while on their holiday in Africa.
The global population of at most 700 wild mountain gorillas is restricted to and split evenly between the dense montane forest of Bwindi National Park and the bamboo clamped slopes of the Virungas. During the curve up of Africa in the 1880s, the Virungas were divided across three separate colonial territories so that the mountain gorillas today are harboured within four independently managed national parks in three different countries of Eastern Central Africa. These are the Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda, the Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda and Parc National des Virunga in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The most reliable locations in which to track gorillas are Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable national park where six habituated groups now exist and Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans.
Tracking the mountain gorilla in the Virungas or Bwindi ranks among the absolute highlights of an African Safari. The exhilaration attached to first setting eyes on a wild Mountain Gorilla is difficult to describe. These are enormous animals up to three times as bulky as the average man, their size exaggerated by a shaggily luxuriant coat. Yet despite their appearance gorillas are remarkably peaceable creatures. More impressive even than the gorilla’s size and bearing is their unfathomable attitude to people which differs greatly from that of any other wild animal.
Several offers for those interested in seeing the mountain gorillas in their wild are available all year round. These gorilla safaris can be taken in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo. These tours run from a minimum of 2 days in Rwanda or 3 days in Uganda to longer trips that may encompass other tours in East Africa.
