BEST ROUTES FOR A SELF DRIVE SAFARI IN SOUTHERN AFRICA :

Cape Town - A destination on its own. Give yourself time to take it all in. There is a wide range of day trips to explore from your base within the City, Waterfront or Winelands. There is also the option to take a variety of short trips for a period of a few nights at time.

Garden Route - The coastline between Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is sprinkled with a variety of seaside resort towns. The landscape is spectacular and full of scenic diversity. A detour into the picturesque Little Karoo and mountainous escarpment adds another aspect to the journey.

Kruger and other Game Reserves - Many of South Africa's National Parks are assessable by road. If you want to do-it-yourself and explore the wild on your own, this is a good budget safari option. You will however, need to abide by the strict park rules and are never permitted to drive off-road. The private lodges can be reached by car but roads are in poor condition, so exercise extreme care.

KwaZulu-Natal and the Drakensberg - This is the land of the famous Zulu people. The province boasts an assortment of dramatic landscapes like the Drakensberg Mountains, expanses of tropical forest, endless beaches and considerable wetland areas. The impressive wildlife, rich culture and history of the area make this an ideal self-drive destination and give you the opportunity to explore your own interests.
