Route::

Cape Town / Johannesburg - Upington - Kalahari - Augrabies Falls National Park - West Coast / Namaqualand - Little Karoo - Breede River - Hermanus / Overberg - Cape Town

Step 1.

Cape Town  or Johannesburg – Upington:
You have an option to fly to Upington from Cape Town or Johannesburg; or drive up from Cape Town (abut a 9 hour drive).

Collect your rental vehicle.  National car hire options.

Time permitting, depart Upington and drive across to the Augrabies Falls National Park (about a 1.15 hours drive from Upington).

The Khoi people called it "Akoerabis", the place of the Great Noise, referring to the Orange River thundering its way downwards for 60 metres in a spectacular waterfall. Picturesque names such as Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner are descriptive of this rocky region, characterised by the 18-kilometre abyss of the Orange River Gorge and craggy outcrops dominating scrub dotted plains. Klipspringer and Kokerboom (quiver trees) stand in stark silhouette against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt ultimately survive.

Step 2.

Upington / Augrabies Falls National Park – Kgalakgadi Transfrontier Park or private Game Lodge:
Depart for an approximate 3.5-hour drive and enter the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park or Private Game Lodge.

Where the red dunes and scrub fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons, where imposing camel thorn trees provide shade for a huge black-maned lions and vantage points for leopard and many raptors…. this is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park.

Step 5.

Kalahari – Springbok – Van Rhynsdorp – Clanwilliam with Private Game Lodge – Lamberts Bay:
En route to Vanrhynsdorp (about a 6.5 hours drive), stop off to visit the Flower Nature Reserve, the Succulent Nursery, gypsum mine, marble mines and 125m Ouberg Waterfall.

Ramskop Nature Reserve with wild flowers in spring time. Fynbos farm 30 km towards Lamberts Bay with export fynbos - beautiful and interesting.

Lamberts Bay- a picturesque seaside village. Bird Island is an attraction for orthonologists; 4x4 and hiking trails; and whale watching in season.

Elands Bay - a bird watchers paradise.

Clanwilliam lies on the well-watered valley of the Jan Dissels stream, where most things seem to grow well; subtropical and deciduous fruit and many vividly coloured flowers, notably red-hot pokers.

Step 6.

West Coast:
Spend the day exploring this region. 

Cedarberg Mountains for rock formations.  Drive 2 km and you are in the mountains and can experience nature at its best. Visit Wupperthal, a German missionary station in the Cederberg.

Algeria in the Cedarberg has long and shorter hiking trails, or even short walks - beautiful for a picnic.

Citrusdal – hot springs, citrus farms.

Velddrif - salt pans with bird life, the Berg River, a unique art gallery in an old church built in 1908. Along the coast, you will view the bokkom sites where they hang the fish out to dry. Pass the Rocher Pan and Berg River for birds with the saltpans. Situated next to Port Owen, on the banks of the Greater Berg River. Forms part of St Helena Bay.

Step 7.

West Coast – Little Karoo:
Continue exploring the West Coast and across to the Little Karoo, where you will overnight in either Tulbagh or Ceres for a suggested 2 nights.

Langebaan- The West Coast National Park that is internationally recognized as one of the great wetlands of the world and home to many waders and fossil trails at Geelbek.  .

Darling - A historical town 75km from Cape Town with seasonal kaleidoscope of vineyards, wheat, dairy and sheep farms.  Around September this lovely town is carpeted with wild spring flowers."

Saldanha
- The safest and most natural Harbour in South Africa.  An active Naval Base and military academy form the hub of this peaceful seaside town.  Short trips out to sea can be arranged.  Enjoy the hospitality of many restaurants and small shops.

Tulbagh (abut a 1.5 hour drive away)is a quaint historical wine and fruit town with wine (e.g. Twee Jongezellen etc,) and fruit estates, museums and restored shops.

For those wishing to go through to Ceres (a further 1.15 hours drive), cross over the Michells Pass to Ceres.
Ceres - The town's apt motto "Loci Dulcedo Nos Attine"t, or "The beauty of the place enchants us', refers the five spectacular passes surrounding this quiet town's and the important deciduous fruit farms, Cherry picking in November & December, Fruit Juice Factories  with packing.

The Little Karoo is a semi desert region in the Southern Cederberg Mountains.  One has the chance to view 25 wild animal species. Take an opportunity to do some animal tracking, view preserved Koi Bushman sites, historical landmarks and farm life.  Enjoy the starkly lit African skies.

Step 9.

Little Karoo - Worcester / De Doorns - Robertson - Bonnievale - Montagu:
It is about 2.15 hours drive from Ceres to Worcester via the Little Karoo.

Worcester - Surrounded by majestic mountains and green valleys. It is also the largest wine-producing district in the country.  Worcester has a fascinating cultural heritage and is a well-known education center with several schools, colleges and special schools for the disabled.  Enjoy Kleinplasie Farm where the whole farm is run as though 100 years ago with equipment, etc from days gone by.

Robertson - An area of Vineyards (e.g. Graham Beck Wine Farm for Cape's best Shiraz wines) set in the fertile Breede River Valley at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, hiking trails, nature reserves e.g. Dassieshoek Nature Reserve which offers a wide variety of fynbos, proteas and beautiful scenery.

McGregor - a pretty little village from the 19th century in which time stood still.  The many thatch roofed Cape between nostalgic fruit and vegetable gardens are well preserved and maintained.

Bonnievale - Lush vineyards, peach and apricot orchards meander through the town, back dropped by the imposing Langeberg Mountain Range.  The Bonita cheese factory is the largest of its kind in the country.

Montagu - natural hot spring water pools, 4x4 tractor ride to superb views of the wine farms in the valley's below.

Step 11.
Montagu - Swellendam – Overberg Area:  Caledon - Hermanus - Gansbaai - Kleinmond:
About a 1.5-hours drive from Montagu to Kleimond on the coast.
Barrydale - historical town situated at e mount of the Breede River; walks; wine co-op; near to the Warmwaterberg therapeutic hot springs.

Swellendam - is situated at the foot of the scenic Tradouw Pass, an agricultural area with the largest Youngberry growing area.  Swellendam is the third-oldest Landdrost (Magisterial) district in South Africa.  The eclectic architecture, fascinating past and outdoors activities adds to the charm of this town.  The Bontebok National Park and Marloth Nature Reserve are situated close by.

Hermanus - One can view the Southern Right Whales calving between June and November from Walker Bay, one of the world's best land whale watching spot.  Seaside village with scenic beauty, fishing and every amenity within walking distance.

Gansbaai - views from the cliffs of Walker Bay.  A tranquil little fishing village near to Danger Bay with clear pools and caves and De Kelders.

Kleinmond - a little resort at the mouth of the Bot River and near to the Palmiet Lagoon.  Fishing at Sundown Bay.  It is a mountain and coastal reserve with short walking trails and marshland rich with water birds.

This area if the coast is famous for whale watching.

Step 12.

Kleinmond - Grabouw - Somerset West – Stellenbosch or Franchoek:
About 1 hour's drive to Cape Town from Kleinmond.  There is a scenic road all along the coast of Cape Town, or you can drive inland via Grabouw.

Grabouw - Grabouw and Elgin are South Africa's apple growing industry areas.  Orchards of apples, peaches and pears and "country shopping".

Somerset West - nestled under the majestic Helderberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains, with international golf course, winelands, large shopping centre and 5 minutes drive to Strand beach. 

Depart for the Winelands areas:
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek - Visit the various wine farms with wine tasting and cellar tours, Co-Ops, restored and historical buildings and farm stalls.  Enjoy scenic views of mountain passes and beautiful landscapes.
