Windhoek - Sossusvlei - Luderitz - Fish River Canyon - Mariental - Windhoek

Step 1.

 Windhoek:
On arrival at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport, collect you rented car.  National car rental options.

Check into accommodation to be reserved in Windhoek.

Situated at an altitude of 1654 metres above sea level and surrounded by mountains, Windhoek has a fresh and light atmosphere.  While the German colonial architecture is still very much in evidence, new buildings emanate a definite feel of Africa.

Step 2.

Windhoek - Sossusvlei:
After breakfast, check out.  Depart Windhoek for Sossusvlei, which is about 4 - 5 hours drive.  Sossusvlei is a dune wonderland, with towering sand dunes up to 300m high surrounding a huge, dried-up pan.  Dunes extend as far as the eye can see and their rich tints vary from pale apricot to vivid reds and oranges.

Check into accommodation to be reserved at Sossusvlei or NamibRand Nature Reserve.

Step 4.

Luderitz:
Travelling time to Luderitz will be 6 hours with majority of the trip on dirt roads - drive at a moderate speed.  The Bremen tobacco merchant, Adolf Luderitz, founded the harbour town of Luderitz in 1884, set between the Namib Desert dunes and the wild Atlantic seaboard. It was the first German settlement in the then Sudwestafrika.  The town has a fine collection of graceful buildings from the German era.  Set against a background of black rock and the sparkling blue waters of the bay, this architectural heritage gives Luderitz its special charm.

Fish River Canyon:
Depart for Fish River Canyon.  Travelling time is between 4 - 5 hours with the last 130 kilometres on dirt road.  This is one of the grandest natural wonders of Africa - ravine 161 kilometres long, up to 27 kilometres wide and almost 550 metres - surpassed only by the Grand Canyon in the USA.
