Johannesburg - Kruger National Park:
Upon arrival at Johannesburg International Airport, collect your rental car.  National car hire options.

Depart on a 5 hour journey to Kruger National Park travelling via Mpumalanga, an area that includes the Drakensberg escarpment with majestic mountains, trout streams; historic interest (Pilgrim's Rest) walks, landscapes; breathtaking sights and waterfalls e.g. God's window; the spectacular Blyde River Canyon.

Kruger National Park - The animals you may see include the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino), plus 137 species of mammal, 112 species of reptile, 33 of amphibian and 227 of butterfly.  There have been 493 species of birds recorded in the Park.  The most common animals to be found in these areas are impala, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, giraffe, waterbuck, warthog, hippo, sable antelope, reedbuck, tsessebe, eland and the less common, the wild dog.

Kruger National Park:

Step 3.
Kruger National Park - Swaziland:
After breakfast check out and depart on a 3-4 hour drive to Swaziland.

Swaziland - (a diverse landof contrasts). Game Parks offering wildlife; hiking in the beautiful Piggs Peak Region; Cultural and heritage sites and villages.

Check into accommodation to be reserved in a game park in Swaziland.  Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Swaziland:

Swaziland - KwaZulu Natal Game Reserves:
After breakfast check out and continue south through Swaziland.  Exit at Lavumisa Border Post and travel on the N2 to one of the KwaZulu Natal Game Reserves.

Check into accommodation to be reserved in Hluhluwe KZN Wildlife, or Mkhuze KZN Wildlife or Ithala KZN Wildlife or St Lucia KZN Wildlife.

KZN - Drakensberg:
After breakfast check out and depart on a 5 hour journey through Zululand to the Drakensberg.

Drakensberg - This is an unspoilt wilderness of grass-covered hills, deep ravines of forests, spectacular Mountains with hikes and walks, waterfalls, dramatic scenery, tourt streams and accommodations offering a variety of recreational facilities.

Check into accommodation to be reserved in Royal Natal National Park or Giants Castle KZN Wildlife or Injisuthi KZN Wildlife or Kamberg KZN Wildlife.

Drakensberg:

Drakensberg - KZN South Coast:
Depart on a 4 hour drive to the southern part of KwaZulu Natal and check into accommodation to be reserved in Oribi Gorge KZN Wildlife.

Step 10.
KZN South Coast - Wild Coast:
After breakfast check out and depart through rural Eastern Cape or the former Transkei as it was known, to the Wild Coast.

Wild Coast - The Eastern Cape coast, which is situated in the former Transkei area, is wild, and aptly named Wild Coast.  The coast has been developed - but not over developed.  Activies inlcude fishing, sailing, swimming, surfing, golf and skin-diving.  The largest of the seaside villages are Port St Johns and Coffee Bay.  The most prominent holiday complex is the superb Wild Coast Sun.  Other much smaller and generally charming beach and river-mouth resorts dot the shoreline.

Wild Coast - Eastern Cape National Park:
After an early breakfast, depart on a 4 hour journey to the Eastern Cape.  Check into accommodation to be reserved in Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock or Addo Elephant National Park near Port Elizabeth.

Cradrock was originally a military outpost, established in 1813 on the upper reaches of the Great Fish River, 260km north of Port Elizabeth.  It has grown into a largish and fairly attractive Karoo town.  The fertile Fish River Valley countryside, with its orchards and pastures and fields of Lucerne, is quite unlike the Karoo proper.

Port Elizabeth, known as the "Friendly City", is the gateway to the province and a fun place for all the family.  The city also boasts lovely beaches and family entertainment such as the Oceanarium and Snake Park.  Historical sites inlcude Donkin Street, where settlers from Britain set up home in 1820.

Eastern Cape National Park:

Eastern Cape National Park - Tsitsikamma National Park:
Travel via Port Elizabeth to the Tsitsikamma Forest area.

Tsitsikamma National Park - indigenous forest with birdlife, bushbuck, bush pig and blue duiker.  There are about 30 species of indigenous trees.  This area is stunning with walks through the forests, along the beautiful beach coves.  It is a haven in itself.

Step 16.

Tsitsikamma National Park - De Hoop:
After breakfast check out and depart along the Garden Route for a 4 hour drive to Bredasdorp and De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Bredasdorp - this is the administration centre for the southernmost district in Africa and a commercial centre for its wheat, wool and dairy products.  The lush fertile valleys are dotted with attractive vleis (shallow lakes) and the hillsides are thick with wild flowers in the Spring.  The Heuningberg (Honey Mountain) Nature Reserve is known for its fynbos especially proteas and ericas and spectacular displays of the Bredasdorp lily.  Even though it is 20kms for the coast, the remains of many sunken ships have found their way to the fascinating Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum.  It really is one of the most interesting archives you are likely to find with large pieces of famous wrecks stories of disaster and an interactive lighthouse display with buttons to press and sirens to stir into action.

Agulhas - The Cape Agulhas is situated at the southernmost point of the African continent.  Its name derived from the Portuguese word for needles.  The early navigators found that here their compasses were not affected by magnetic deviation, 'bearing directly upon the true poles of the earth.'  A lighthouse (18 million candlepower), built in 1848, stands at the cape; close by is the tiny village and beach resort of L'Agulhas, the nearest town of any substance is Bredasdorp.

Arniston - also known by its more official name, Weanhuiskrans, this is an enchanting little fishing village of thatched and limewashed cottage farther along the coast, to the east.  The two names given the place have their interest: the Arniston was a British troopship wrecked in the area, with the loss of 372 lives in 1815; Waenhuiskrans translates as 'wagon house cliff', a reference to the huge sea-cavern nearby.

Of interest here and along the coast are the giant pods of the Entada Gigas sea-bean, and a number of stone fish-traps built by the 'Strandloper' ('beachranger') people in prehistoric times.

Depart on a 2 hour journey to Cape Town.  Your route will take you via Swellendam and the Bontebok National Park.

Cape Town is the cosmopolitan "Mother City of South Africa" with its beautiful and scenic peninsula, oceans, lakes, mountains, shopping malls, theaters and recreational facilities.

Cape Town - Karoo National Park:
Depart on a 4 hour drive to Beaufort West.  En route stop off at Matjiesfontein.

Beaufort West - The largest town on the Karoo section of the Great North Road, Beaufort West was founded in 1818 and 20 years later become the first municipality to be proclaimed in South Africa (under the new elective laws).  It is noted for its pleasant pear-tree-lined streets, and as the birthplace of famed heart surgeon Chris Barnard, many of whose awards and medals are on display in the local museum.  Its newspaper, The Courier, has been published without interruption since 1869.

Step 24.
Witsand Nature Reserve - Kalahari:
Early morning check out as today's journey is about 7 hours drive through the Karoo passing towns like Victoria West and Prieska.  Journey's end is at Witsand Nature Reserve.  Few eco-destinations in the Northern Cape are as scenic as Witsand Nature Reserve and even fewer boast the luxury accommodation they offer the visitors.  Only they can offer you sensual, flowing white dunes - twenty to sixty metres high - surrounded by copper-red Kalahari sand, Acacia woodland and the Langberg Mountain range.  Home of the famous "Brusland" or roaring sands of the Kalahari.

Witsand Nature Reserve - Augrabies National Park:
Depart on an hour's drive to Augrabies National Park.  En route stop in Upington, Keimoes and Kakamas. 

Augrabies National Park - The Khoi people called it "Akoerabis", the place of the Grat Noise, referring to the Orange River thundering its way downwards for 60 metres in a spectacular waterfall.  Picturesque names such as Moon Rock, Ararat and Echo Corner are descriptive of this rocky region, characterised by the 18 kilometres abyss of the Orange River Gorge and craggy outcrops dominating scrub dotted plains.  Klipspringer and Kokerboom (quiver trees) stand in stark silhouette against the African sky, silent sentinels in a strangely unique environment where only those that are able to adapt ultimately survive.

Step 27.
Kgalagadi National Park:
Return to Upington and from there continue north for about 2 hours to the Kgalagadi National Park.  Where the rd dunes and scrub fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok, eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons, where imposing camel thorn trees provide shade for a huge black-maned lions and vantage points for leopard and many raptors.....this is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park.
