Description:

Tswalu meaning “a new beginning” in the Tswana language was founded by English entrepreneur Stephen Boler in 1995. Today Tswalu covers 900 km˛ (90 000ha). Following Stephen Boler’s death in 1998, South Africa’s Oppenheimer family purchased Tswalu in April 1999.

The Tswalu Kalahari reserve is committed to protecting the environment and sustaining the indigenous ecosystem so that it may thrive. Tswalu seeks to make a contribution to nature conservation by: restoring the natural environment, re-establishing and protecting the biological diversity and maintaining the natural ecological process of the Kalahari environment.

Tswalu, situated in the Northern Cape Province in the Kalahari, South Africa; is 700km from Johannesburg, 270km from Upington, 380km from Kimberley and 1200km from Cape Town. Situated in an area that is free from Malaria and other tropical disease, Tswalu is the largest singly owned private game reserve in South Africa. Historic home of Bushman, over 70 species of mammals and more that 180 species of birds.

Motse:
Additional features of Motse are the lounge and dining area, library, traditional African Boma, Dimpho (Gift Shop), Jwa Bana (Children’s Room with Child Minder), wine cellar, sun deck and outdoor heated swimming pool.
Children aged 12 and under sharing with adults stay free.
Children aged 12 and under not sharing with adults pay 50% of the rack rate.

Tarkuni:
Set in its own private area on the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Tarkuni offers guests the ultimate African experience in sensational secluded luxury. Ideal for small groups and families, Tarkuni is available for parties up to eight adults.
A private game viewing vehicle and a dedicated Chef allow the luxury of flexibility.
Children aged 12 and under stay free.

Room Descriptions:

Motse:
Accommodates a total of 22 guests.
Nine individual desert sand wall and thatch roof legaes (suites).
Two of the nine legaes (suites) were designed with families in mind, each accommodating four people.
Each legae (suite) overlooks the watering hole and comprises an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, outside shower, private lounge, open fireplace, private sun deck, telephone, safe and mini bar.

Tarkuni:
Tarkuni comprises four luxury bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and outdoor shower, open plan lounge and dining room, library, covered patio and heated swimming pool.

Children’s accommodation comprises two sets of bunk beds, sleeping four.
Nannies room accommodation comprises of two single beds and bathroom en suite.

Transfers to and from Tswalu, international telephone calls, Tswalu gift shop purchases, private safari vehicle hire with personal field guide and tracker, horse riding accompanied by a qualified riding guide, transfer to and from Sishen Golf Course plus green fees, baby sitting service.

Tarkuni

Tips and Hints:

Activities:
Game drives in open-sided, canopied safari vehicles.
Private vehicle with personal field guide and tracker R1 800 per day.

Horse riding accompanied by a qualified equestrian:

One to six hour rides, day rides, mountain rides and sunset dune rides available.
Tuition offered in an enclosed post and rail arena.  Riding equipment available.
R150 per half-hour tuition.
R300 per hour and pro rata hourly rates thereafter.

Bush walks led by experienced field guides who give guests an insight into the local vegetation, bush medicines, cosmetics and hunting skills of the San People.

Sundowners on Namakwari’s lantern-lit dunes, Boma dining and Lekgaba Lookout offer a variety of eating experiences; and bush dining is a relaxing interlude during a game drive, horse ride or walk.
Watering holes provide wonderful bird and game viewing opportunities.
Lekgaba lookout offers breathtaking landscapes for both artists and photographers.
The Kalahari region is regarded as the finest area in Africa for stargazing and Tswalu has a high- powered telescope with which to explore the night sky.
Sishen Golf Club, one hour from Tswalu and rated in the top 20 best courses in South Africa.  Green fees, transfer costs, a caddie and lunch R580 (2 ball) per person R460 (4 ball) per person Archaeology sites can be visited on request.
